There may have been a fourth brother, but it is not known whether he came to New England or not. Leonards of the proper age would possibly be Solomon (in 1637 of Duxbury, and afterwards of Bridgewater), Rice (of Rehoboth in 1644) or John (of Springfield in 1639, 1643, and has multiple children there.)1,3,4
According to Goodenough, his parents were Richard Leonard, d. 1630, 13th Lord Dacre, m. Lady Anne Throckmorton; but she also has him as son of Sampson Leonard and Lady Margaret Fiennes, Baroness Dacre. While this last couple had a son Thomas, acc. other sources that Thomas died unmarried5,6 There is also a Leonard family that settled in Bridgewater, MA, but no relation has been found, according to Deane. The Leonards of Springfield (family of Josiah Leonard, who was the first husband of Thomas Root's second wife) are also most likely not related to the Leonards of Taunton (family of James Leonard). Goudenough treats both families in her book, and claims they are closely related.1,4
