William Clapp was born c 1500.1 He married Alise.1 He died bt 29 May 1555 - 26 Jul 1555 in Sidbury, Devon, England,1, and was buried in the St. Giles Cemetery at Sidbury.2

William was listed in the Devon subsidy rolls of 1523 through 1525 and from from 1541 through 1551 in the East Budleigh Hundred, parish of Sidbury. [From: The Devonshire Lay Subsidy of 1332, Audrey M. Erskine, ed., Devon & Cornwall Record Society, New Series, vol. 14, pp. 59, 106, 123.] Early Chancery Proceedings from 1533 to 1538 record a complaint against John Pery and John Wodde made by WIlliam Clapp for taking the profits from the Clapp lands once owned by William's father, the late Thomas Clapp. William Clapp describes himself as of Sidbury, Deven, yeoman, and poor "bedman."3

First, I bequeath my solle to Allmighty God & my body to be buryed in holly turffe.
Item, unto 2 of my daughters which one is marryed, Beaton & Johane at the makyng of this not marryed so that they will marry with the advyse of their mother & of my overseers of this my last will, £20 to every of them apiece. And if they should do otherwise then I would them to have no benefyte of this my last will, £20, to every of them apiece.
Item to Florence Ybdon a panne and 2 brode dysshes.
Item unto 2 of William Ybdon's children 20/- apiece.
Item to Jyllyan Badstone, a panne.
Item to Alse Ynglande a panne and a vate.
Item to the daughters of the same Alse 20/-.
Item to every one of my godchildren 12d. apiece.
Item to the hye awter of Sydbury to be prayed for 6/8.
Item to the repayr of the same church 6/8.
Item to the repayr of the churche of Harford [sic Harpford] 6/8.
